Finding the right outfit to wear for your session can be daunting and can make you want to throw in the towel! But don’t worry, below in no particular order are some suggestions and tips to help make the process as easy as can be and will leave you feeling your very best for your session!
Match your outfits to your session location
Think of where your session will be… say your session is going to be in an overly flowered location, maybe stay away from any prints that can take away from that. A nice neutral color ensemble may mesh well with a busier backdrop. Maybe your session is in the city, think of the vibe of the city, maybe heels with a cute pair of jeans to give you little more of an edge to the look possibly?
It’s all about the ladies and kiddos!
When trying to decide not just what you plan to wear but what your significant other is going to wear, what your child is going to wear, etc…. I suggest go with you or your kiddo first! If it is just the two of you for an engagement session, find your outfits first and then cater his around yours. If you are having a family session, maybe start with the kiddos, maybe even have their outfits pop a little more than yours to show off their personalities then build the parent’s outfits around that.
Watch your patterns
Try to keep the patterns to a minimum, very busy patterns can take away from you and your family. Don’t be afraid of textures or minimal amounts of patterns, but try to remember to not overpower your outfits as a whole with them. We want you to stand out in the session, not your clothing!
Be comfortable!
Especially if this is a newborn session and you just had that beautiful baby that we will be documenting, maybe just some maternity leggings with a flowy top and/or scarf? You will be much more comfortable than in jeans and that always transitions into the camera. If you are someone who never wears a suit or hates dresses or heels, don’t wear those to your session! Be you first and foremost. You want these images to reflect who you and your family are. And I will repeat again because it is just so dang important… if you are comfortable in what you’re are wearing, that will transition to the camera!
For an engagement session, if you do want to get out of your outfit comfort zone, I am all for that! Since we will be most liking having an outfit change, I would suggest starting in that comfortable outfit, we will get you comfortable in front of that camera and then once we change you into that second outfit, you will already be in the zone and we will rock out that second half!
Always coordinate!
Think of gradeschool and that color wheel! What colors complement each other and which colors absolutely do not?! As a couple or family as a whole, try to find a family of colors that match each other that everyone one is wearing in some way, shape or form. Maybe you find one pop of color and it’s in a necklace for someone, or a belt for someone else, maybe it’s one person’s top color and anther person’s headband/bow color, etc. Ideas are limitless. A good go to Pinterest search is “coordinating outfit colors”. It will give you plenty of ideas if you find yourself color challenged!
