How to Prepare Your Kids for a Photo Session (So It’s Actually Fun)

If the thought of getting your kids ready for family photos feels a little… stressful—you’re not alone.

As a family photographer serving Wentzville and Hermann, I hear this all the time:

“What if my kids don’t listen?”
“What if they won’t smile?”
“What if it turns into chaos?”

Here’s the truth: your session doesn’t need perfect behavior to create beautiful photos.

In fact, some of the best images come from the in-between moments—the giggles, the cuddles, the real-life chaos.

But there are a few simple things you can do to set your kids (and yourself!) up for a smooth, fun session.

1. Talk About It Like It’s Something Fun (Because It Is)

Your kids will take their cues from you.

Instead of saying:
“We have to take pictures today…”

Try:
“We’re going to go play and take some fun pictures together!”

Build excitement ahead of time. Let them know:

  • There will be snuggles
  • There will be games
  • There will be time to just be themselves

When kids feel like it’s a fun outing—not a chore—they show up totally different.

2. Don’t Over-Prep (Seriously)

It’s tempting to rehearse:

  • “Say cheese!”
  • “Stand still!”
  • “Smile nice!”

…but this actually works against you.

Kids come into the session already feeling pressure—and that’s when things get stiff or resistant.

Instead, trust your photographer (hi, that’s me!!) to guide the session naturally.

I use prompts, games, and movement to get real smiles—not forced ones.

3. Timing Is Everything

This might be the most important tip.

Try to schedule your session when your kids are:

  • Well-rested
  • Fed (non-negotiable)
  • Not close to nap meltdown territory

For most families, that means:

  • Morning sessions for younger kids
  • Early evening (golden hour) for older kids

If you’re booking a session in the Wentzville or Hermann areas, I’ll help guide you on the best timing based on light and your kids’ routines.

4. Bring Snacks + Comfort Items

This is your secret weapon.

Think:

  • Non-messy snacks
  • A favorite stuffed animal
  • A small toy or comfort item

These can:

  • Reset a mood quickly
  • Give kids something familiar
  • Even sneak into a few sweet, personal photos

5. Let Go of “Perfect”

This is the big one.

Your kids don’t need to:

  • Sit still
  • Smile perfectly
  • Look at the camera every second

Some of the most meaningful images come from:

  • Kids running into your arms
  • Belly laughs
  • Quiet snuggles
  • Even the shy moments

Your job isn’t to control the session.

Your job is to love on your kids and be present.

I’ll take care of the rest!

6. Dress for Comfort (Not Just Style)

Yes, outfits matter—but comfort matters more.

If your child is:

  • Itchy
  • Too hot
  • Restricted

…it will show immediately.

Stick with:

  • Soft, breathable fabrics
  • Clothes they can move in
  • Outfits that feel like them

(Pro tip: I’m always happy to help style your session so everything coordinates beautifully without stress.)

7. Trust the Process

Every parent worries a little before their session.

And almost every single time?

They leave saying:

“That was way easier than I expected.”

Kids don’t need perfection to create magic.

They just need space to be themselves—and a photographer who knows how to meet them where they are.
